Joshua Thomas Acker, Ph.D., Ret., Director of Human Resources, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office

Dr. Joshua Thomas Acker has a Ph.D. in Psychology, is a licensed mental health professional, and has over 25 years as a law enforcement officer. He retired as the Director of Human Resources for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.

Dr. Acker created the role of Psychological Services Coordinator at the Sheriff's Office. He developed the CISM/Peer Support team for his agency and grew the team to over 60 active members. He served as the Executive Director of the County's regional CISM Team, and provided leadership in CISM efforts at the local and state levels. He has helped many agencies establish employee support programs, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) teams, and employee and supervisory training. Tom is an International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) approved instructor in four areas: Group Crisis Intervention, Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support, Advanced Group Crisis Intervention, and Law Enforcement Perspectives for CISM Enhancement. He provides these trainings on a regular basis to many agencies. He is also a master trainer in Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. He teaches as an contract adjunct faculty member for multiple academic institutions.

While being active in the Tampa Bay area, he has also traveled elsewhere in the country to provide consultation, crisis intervention, and supportive services for individuals and agencies.
