Florida RCPI is the Recipient of Two COPS Office 2012 Funding Awards

The Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) announced their 2012 funding awards in August. In the category of COPS Community Policing Development Grants, FL RCPI was awarded:

  • $400,000 for a two-year program to provide training to the Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD) and other municipal police agencies in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. This funding will allow the FL RCPI to continue to help strengthen police-community relationships, build new partnerships and improve those that already exist. FL RCPI will work with our already-established Puerto Rico Training Initiative as well as other partners in Puerto Rico to provide more wide-spread training in the tenets of community policing (partnership building and problem solving) as well as ethics and other courses that will help build trust between the police and the citizens of the Island.
We are very excited to receive this award and have already begun to work with the PRPD. We will provide updates in English as well as in Spanish on our Conexion Hispana link.
  • $200,000 for a two-year program to develop a comprehensive awareness campaign for Law Enforcement Suicide Prevention. The strategy for this program is to combine online training, supplemental informational resources, as well as reports documenting interventions currently being used across the country in order to provide a protocol for agencies on how to address an officer suicide. It is hoped that the campaign will increase the awareness in the law enforcement community of the signs and symptoms of potential suicide attempts and the resources available regarding intervention, etc.
FL RCPI has been involved in providing our “In Harm’s Way” awareness and training program throughout Florida ( and the U.S. for many years, but with the growing number of law enforcement suicides continuing to take place throughout the country, we are so pleased to be awarded funding to continue the fight against these preventable tragedies happening within our law enforcement community.
